| exponent | indicates the number of times the base is used as a factor |
| factor pair | a set of two factors; when multiplied they result in a definite number |
| factor tree | diagram that helps you find the factors of a number |
| greatest common factor | the biggest factor that is shared by two or more numbers |
| least common multiple | the smallest multiple shared by two or more numbers |
| numerical expression | an expression that contains only numbers and operations |
| order of operations | the order in which to perform operations when evaluating expressions with more than one operation |
| perfect square | the square of a whole number |
| power | a product of repeated factors |
| prime factorization | writing a number as a product of its prime factors |
| prime number | a whole number greater than 1 with exactly two factors, 1 and itself |
| Venn diagram | diagram of overlapping circles, used to show the relationships between two or more sets |
| reciprocals | two numbers whose product is 1 |
| algebraic expression | an expression that contains numbers, operations, and one or more symbols |
| coefficient | the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable |

| equivalent expressions | expressions with the same value |
| like terms | terms of an algebraic expression that have the same variables raised to the same exponents |
| terms | parts of an algebraic expression |
| variable | a symbol that represents one or more numbers |
| factoring an expression | writing a numerical expression or algebraic expression as a product of factors |
| least common denominator | the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators of two or more fractions |
