Chapter 4 Esthetics

Disorders and Diseases

Benign Meaning "not harmful"
Malignant Meaning "cancerous"
Carcinoma A cancerous tissue
Actinic Keratosis Pink or flesh colored precancerous lesions that feel sharp or rough, resulting from sun damage.
Basal Cell Carcinoma Most common and least Severe type of skin cancer, which often appears as a light, pearly nodules; characteristics include sores, reddish patches, or a smooth growth with an elevated boarder.
Squamos Cell Carcinoma More serious than basal cell carcinoma; characterized by scaly, red or pink papules or nodules; also appear as open sores or crusty areas; can grow and spread in the body.
Malignant Melanoma The most serious for of skin cancer as it can spread quickly (metastasize); black or dark patches on the skin are usually uneven in texture, jagged or raised. 100% fatal if left untreated.
ABCDE Asymmetry, Boarder, Color, Diameter, Evolving
Acne An inflammatory skin disorder of the sebacceous glands; characterized by excess sebum production.
Papules Red, inflamed lesions caused by the inflammation process.
Pustules Filled with fluid from the dead white blood cells that fought the infection.
Cysts Nodules made up of deep pockets of infection.
Pilosebaceous unit This is the entire hair follicle including that hair shaft, sebaceous gland, and the sebaceous duct or canal to the surface.
Comedo Noninflamed build up of cells, sebum, and other debris inside follicles.
Open comedo A blackhead, open at the surface and exposed to air.
Closed Comedo This forms when the openings of the follicles are blocked with debris and white cells, also referred to as a whitehead.
Sebaceous Filaments Small, solidified impactions of oil wihtout the cell matter; filaments block the follicle and can cause acne breakouts, often found on the nose.
Milia Small epidermal cysts that appear as firm white papules. Whitish, pearl-like masses of sebum and dead cells under the skin. No visible opening, often mistaken for whiteheads.
