The digestive system chp 25

QuestionAnswer
What is the digestive systemm The digestive system is a group of organs working together to break down food into smaller particles, these smaller particles can then be absorbed into the blood and transported around the body.
What are the stages of nutrition 1. Ingestion 2. Digestion 3. Absorption 4 assimilation 5. Egestion
Explain ingestion Food is taken in by the mouth
Explain digestion Ingested food is broken down into smaller pieces by the digestive system
explain absorption Digested food particles are absorbed into the blood and transported to cells, tissues and organs.
Explain assimilation Food is used by cells, tissues and organs for energy, growth, repair
Explain egestion Unabsorbed food is passed from the body
Why must large food molecules be broken down Large food molecules must be broken down so our bodies can absorb the nutrients from food.
What is physical digestion Physical digestion is the breaking down of food using physical methods
What is chemical digestion Chemical digestion is the breaking down of food using enzymes and chemical reactions
Where does physical digestion occur Physical digestion occurs In the mouth, where teeth chew the food, and by churning in the stomach, the stomach muscles cause a motion that churns and mixes food with digestive juices
Where does chemical digestion occur Chemical digestion occurs in the mouth when food is mixed with enzymes in saliva,in the stomach when food is mixed when gastric juices, and in the small intestine when food is mixed with bile and other intestinal juices.
Name all parts of digestive system Mouth, Salivary glands Liver Oesophagus Gallbladder Stomach Small intestine Pancreas Rectum Large intestine Anus
What is the role of the mouth Chew food, enzymes in salvia break down food.
What is role of salivary glands produces saliva and enzyme called amylase.
Role of liver Makes bile, bile contains enzymes that break down fats
Oesophegaus Passes food from mouth to stomach
Role of gallbladder Stores and releases bile
Role of stomach Food is churned, hydrochloric acid kills bacteria, gastric juices contain enzymes
Role of pancreas Produces enzymes
Role os small intestine Bile+ pancreatic juice break down food, nutrients from digested food absorbed into blood.
Role of rectum Stores unabsorbed waste food, poop.
Role of large intestine Water is absorbed from food in blood, forms poop from indigestible unusable food.
Role of anus Passed poop from body
