TermDefinition
Emotional or Behavioral Disorders (EBD) A condition where a student shows ongoing emotional or behavioral problems that negatively affect learning, relationships, and school performance. Hi
Conduct Disorder A pattern of serious rule-breaking and aggressive behaviors such as fighting, stealing, lying, or harming others.
Externalizing Behavior Outward behaviors like aggression, defiance, disruption, and acting out.
Internalizing Behavior Inward behaviors such as anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and fearfulness.
Comorbidity When a person has two or more disorders at the same time.
Schizophrenia A severe mental disorder involving distorted thinking, hallucinations, delusions, and withdrawal from reality.
Aggressive Behavior Hostile or harmful actions toward others, such as hitting, yelling, or destroying property.
Immature/Withdrawn Behavior Shy, anxious, or socially withdrawn behavior that limits peer interaction.
Enuresis Repeated involuntary urination (bed-wetting) past the typical age of bladder control.
School Failure Ongoing academic underachievement or inability to meet grade-level expectations.
Manifestation Determination (MD) A meeting to decide if a student’s misbehavior was caused by their disability.
Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) A process used to determine why a behavior occurs in order to plan effective interventions.
Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) A written plan that outlines strategies to reduce problem behavior and teach appropriate behavior.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) A school-wide approach that promotes positive behavior and prevents discipline problems.
Interim Alternative Educational Setting (IAES) A temporary placement for a student with a disability due to serious behavior, while still providing services.
