Declaration of Independence (1776)

This document announced that the American colonies were separating from Great Britain. It explains that people have natural rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness) and that government gets its power from the people.

Articles of Confederation (1781)

This was the first plan of government for the United States. It created a very weak national government because the states wanted to keep most of the power.

U.S. Constitution (1787)

This document created the structure of the U.S. government. It explains the powers of each branch, how laws are made, and how power is limited.

Bill of Rights (1791)

The first ten amendments to the Constitution. These amendments protect individual freedoms such as speech, religion, and the rights of the accused.
