| Conduct Disorder | A serious behavior disorder in children or teens involving ongoing rule-breaking, aggression, and violation of others’ rights. |
| Externalizing Behavior | Problem behaviors directed outward, such as aggression, yelling, hitting, or defiance. |
| Internalizing Behavior | Problem behaviors directed inward, such as anxiety, depression, withdrawal, or low self-esteem. |
| Comorbidity | When a person has two or more disorders or conditions at the same time. |
| Schizophrenia | A severe mental disorder involving distorted thinking, hallucinations, delusions, and difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy. |
| Aggression | Behavior intended to harm another person physically or emotionally. |
| Enuresis | Repeated involuntary urination (bedwetting), usually in children past the typical age of bladder control. |
| Encopresis | Repeated involuntary bowel movements (soiling) in inappropriate places, usually past toilet-training age. |
| Zero Tolerance | A school policy that requires strict, predetermined consequences (often suspension or expulsion) for certain rule violations. |
| Manifestation Determination (MD) | A legal review to decide whether a student’s misbehavior was caused by their disability before serious discipline is given. |
| Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) | A process used to identify the cause or function of a student’s challenging behavior. |
| Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) | A written plan based on an FBA that outlines strategies to improve problem behavior. |
| Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support (PBIS) | A school-wide approach that teaches and reinforces positive behavior to prevent problem behaviors. |
| Interim Alternative Educational Settings (IAES) | A temporary placement outside the regular classroom for students who violate serious rules, while still receiving educational services. |
| Time-Out | A behavior strategy where a student is briefly removed from a reinforcing environment to decrease inappropriate behavior. |
