TermDefinition
Archduke Franz Ferdinand The Austro-Hungarian that was assassinated thus starting WW1.
Gavrilo Princip He murdered Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife; he was Serbian and a Member of the Black Hand.
Black Hand A nationalist organization devoted to ending Austro-Hungarian presents in the Balkans. In the POV of the Austro-Hungarian's this was seen as a terrorist group.
Serbia Serbia rejected Austro-Hungary's ultimatum therefore pushing them to go to war with Serbia. (Austro-Hungary + Germany and Serbia + Russia).
Militarism Aggressive military preparedness; it celebrated war and armed forces. It also views war as more of a game than something serious.
Alliance Groups who agree to protect and help one another when they are attacked. If one member was attacked the other was expected to stand up for that particular member.
Triple Entente Being allied with countries that were sworn enemies of another country your allied with.
Triple Alliance The allies rival alliance before the war.
Central Powers Nations that fought against the allied powers (Germany, Austro-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria).
Imperialism The alliance system developed largely because of Western European countries becoming bitter rivals for global domination.
Nationalism An ideology asserting that a specific nation (defined by shared culture, language, or history) should govern itself and control its own state.
Self-determination The idea that people of the same ethnicity, language, culture, and political ideals should be united and have the right to form an independent nation-state.
