What is the myth of The Sea of Flames? The Sea of Flames is a diamond - if acquired, the aquiree will live forever, but the people around him will die.
What role does Jutta play in the novel? Jutta acts as Werner's conscience while he is away at school and during the war.
Who is Frederick? Frederick is a friend Werner made at school, who later became disabled because of wounds he obtained.
What role does Frederick play in the novel? Frederick symbolises innocence and purity. He has bad eyesight and a slim frame make him look weak to his superiors because they only care about dominance and strength.
Who is Von Rumpel? Von Rumpel is a Nazi officer who was searching for The Sea of Flames.
Why does Von Rumpel want The Sea of Flames? Von Rumpel wants to find The Sea of Flames to cure his cancer.
What do Madame Manec, Marie-Laure and Etienne do in resistance to the war? Madame Manec gathers her friends and causes little acts of mischief to throw off the Germans who have invaded France. Then, after she dies, Etienne and Marie Laure continue her work by retrieving bread with messages, which they broadcast on the radio.
