Containment Doctrine that accepted that Eastern Europe was under Communist control but sought to prevent any expansion.
GI Bill A government program started in 1944 that helped veterans returning from WW2 buy homes and attend college
Iron Curtain The military and political divide in Europe between Western capitalist and Eastern communist countries.
Liberal consensus An agreement between Democrats and Republicans in Congress made after WW2 to continue welfare, develop a national security system, and strengthen the executive branch.
Marshall Plan Economic aid program to restore economic stability to western Europe after WW2
Occupation Zone An area of a country in which a foreign military takes control
Rural electrification A government program that ran power lines through rural communities.
White-collar The class of people whose jobs typically take place in an office/professional environment and don't involve manual labor
Aerospace industry The business of building airplanes, spacecrafts, and other vehicles that travel in the air
Arms Race A political situation in which rival countries try to gather/produce the most military weapons
Demilitarized zone An area in which military personnel and weapons are not allowed.
Government in exile A government that has been deposed and attempts to rule from another land
Hydrogen Bomb A nuclear weapon that explodes due to compacted gases inside
Infrastructure The basic systems of a society including roads, bridges sewers, and electricity
Military-industrial complex A country’s military establishment and industries producing arms/other military materials.
Proxy war A series of battles that are provoked by a nation that does not participate in the fighting
Libel The crime of making verbal/written claims about someone without evidence

Why were the Verona Papers so important? They revealed Soviet espionage in the US during the Cold War and WW2
What was the Manhattan Project? Top secret US-led WW2 program to develop the first atomic weapon
Where did Chinese Nationalist Chiang Kai-shek flee after Mao Zedong created the People’s Republic of China? Taiwan
What prompted the Soviet Union to create the Warsaw Pact? They wanted to counter the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
What was the Eastern Bloc? Soviet communist governments that suppressed political opposition and used brutal methods
What caused unions to go on strike in the aftermath of WW2? Reduced overtime, unemployment, downgrading, prices rises, and increased productivity
How did the Marshall Plan affect the economies of European countries and the United States? Secured vital foreign markets, prevented economic depression, and fostered strong, anti-communist allies
How did the United Nations embody the ideals set forth in the Atlantic Charter? Promoting cooperation among nations and working together to solve conflicts peacefully
