| Louisiana purchase | The land purchased by Thomas Jefferson that more than doubled the size of the United States |
| Oregon Trail | The most well-known trail that Pioneers used to travel to the Pacific Ocean |
| Physical barrier | Any quality or feature of geography that worked against or hindered the pioneers in their journey to settle in the west |
| Physical Gateway | Any quality of future or geography that helped or benefited the pioneers in their journey to settle in the West |
| Pioneer | One of the first settlers in a new territory |
| Settler | A person who settles in a new colony or settles into an unfamiliar location |
| Territorial expansion | The period of time between 1801– 1861 won the United States group tremendously and land size |

| The Alamo | One of the most famous battles between Texas and Mexico |
| Trail of tears | The journey of the five civilized tribes who were living deep south relocated to the current state of Oklahoma this journey was treacherous as exposed to disease, whether and starvation killed thousands |
