| Gold rush | the mass movement of people who moved to California between 1848-1853 in search of gold |
| Indian removal act | President Andrew Johnson's policy where he negotiated treaties with Native Americans, exchanging land east of the Mississippi for land in the west- this was supposed to be voluntary but ended up forcing Native Americans out of their homelands and obusing |
| Louisiana Purchase | the land purchased by Thomas Jefferson that more than doubled the size of the united states |
| Oregon Trail | the most well known trail that pioneers used to travel to the Pacific Ocean |
| Physical barrier | Any quality or feature of geography that worked against or hindered the pioneers in their journey to settle in the west |
