Containment A U.S. security policy during the Cold War in which military action was used to stop the Soviet Union from spreading communism
GI Bill A government program started in 1944 that helped veterans returning from WW2 buy homes and attend college
Iron Curtain The military and political divide in Europe between Western capitalist and Eastern communist countries
Liberal consensus The agreement between the Democrats and Republicans in Congress made after WW2 to continue welfare, develop a national security system, and strengthen the executive branch of government
Marshall Plan A U.S. economic aid program to restore economic stability to western Europe after WW2
Occupation zone An area of a country in which a foreign military takes control
Rural electrification A government program that ran power lines through rural communities
White-collar Relating to the class of people whose jobs typically take place in an office or professional environment and don't involve manual labor
Aerospace industry The business of building airplanes, spacecrafts, and other vehicles that travel in the air
Arms race A political situation in which rival countries try to gather or produce the most military weapons
Demilitarized zone An area in which military personnel and weapons are not allowed
Government-in-exile A government that has been deposed attempts to rule from another land
Hydrogen bomb A nuclear weapon that explodes due to compacted gases inside
Infrastructure The basic systems of a society including roads, bridges, sewers, and electricity
Military industrial complex A country's military establishment and industries producing arms or other military materials
Proxy war A series of battles that are provoked by by a nation that does not participate in the fighting
Libel The crime of making verbal or written negative claims about someone without evidence
Loyalty oath A sworn statement confirming a person does not belong and has never belonged to various organizations including those identified as communist
McCarthyism The practice of accusing people of being traitors to their country without offering proof
Subversion An act of destabilizing a major social or political system in an attempted to destroy it
Domino Theory An idea during the Cold War that countries neighbor communist countries are more likely to fall to communism
