| Fascism | Political movement based on nationalism that gives power to a dictator and takes away from individual rights. |
| Axis Powers | Germany, Italy, and Japan. |
| Winston Churchill | Leader of Britain. |
| Isolationism | Belief that political ties with other countries should be avoided. |
| Blitzkreig | Warfare in which surprise air attacks are followed by massive attacks on land. |
| Mein Kempf | Book by Hitler outlining his beliefs and goals for Germany. |
| Benito Mussolini | Fascist leader of Italy. |
| Adolf Hitler | Fascist leader of Germany. |
| Allies | Great Britain, France, US, and USSR. |
| Non-aggression Pact | Agreement that says countries will not attack or invade one another. |
| Battle of the Bulge | Final large-scale attack by German troops that was forced back by the Allies. |
| Pearl Harbor | Navy base in Hawaii attacked by the Japanese. |
| Dwight Eisenhower | American general who helped drive the Germans out of Africa. |
| Demilitarization | Breaking down armed forces and military. |
| D-Day (Operation Overlord) | Huge Allied invasion mounted to retake France from the Germans. |
| Battle of Stalingrad | Battle during which the Red Army forced the Germans out of a Soviet industrial center. |
| Isoroku Yamamoto | Japanese admiral who decided that the US fleet in Hawaii had to be destroyed. |
| Kamikaze | Literally means divine wind; Japanese aircraft making a deliberate crash on an enemy target. |
| Douglas MacArthur | US general who commanded Allied forces in the Pacific. |
| Democratization | Process of creating a government elected by the people. |
| Operation Barbarossa | Hitler’s three-pronged invasion of the Soviet Union. Targets: Leningrad, Moscow, and the southern oil fields. June 1941 - January 1942. |
