| Abduction | Movement of the body part away from the midline |
| Adduction | Movement of the body part toward the midline |
| Anterior | Toward the front of the body |
| Apex (plural) | The tip or pointed end of an organ |
| Bilateral | Affecting both sides of the body |
| Combining vowel | A vowel (usually “o”) used to connect a word root to a suffix or another root word |
| Deep | Located farther inside the body |
| Distal | Farther from the point of attachment or the trunk of the body |
| Dorsal | Toward the back of the body |
| Extension | Straightening of a joint or increasing the angle between bones |
| Flexion | Bending a joint or decreasing the angle between the bones |
| Fowler position | A position where the patient is lying on the back with the upper body raised |
| Inferior | below the structure |
| Lateral | Away from the midline of the body |
| Medial | Toward the midline of the body |
| Palmar | Reffering to the palm of the hand |
| Plantar | Reffering to the sole of the foot |
| Posterior | Toward the back of the body |
| Prefix | added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning |
| Prone | Lying face down |
| Proximal | Closer to the point of attachment or trunk of the body |
| Quadrants | Four sections of the abdomen used to locate organs or pain |
| Suffix | A word part added to the end of a word to change its meaning |
| Superficial | Located near the surface of the body |
| Superior | Located above another structure |
| Supine | Lying face up |
| Ventral | Toward the front of the body |
| Word root | main part of a medical word that gives it core meaning |
