Chapter 8 Study Stack

TermDefinition
Conduct Disorder A serious emotional and behavioral disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of violating the rights of others and breaking major societal rules or norms.
Externalizing Behavior Refers to disruptive, outward-directed behaviors such as aggression, defiance, and hyperactivity that negatively affect others.
Internalizing behavior Refers to inward-directed emotional difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal, that primarily affect the individual rather than others.
Comorbidity The presence of two or more disorders or disabilities occurring together in the same individual at the same time.
Schizophrenia A severe mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thinking, perception, emotions, and behavior, often including delusions and hallucinations.
Aggression Behavior intended to cause harm or injury to another person, either physically or emotionally.
Enuresis The repeated, involuntary urination into clothing or bed by a child who is old enough to have achieved bladder control.
Encopresis The repeated, involuntary passage of feces in inappropriate places by a child who is developmentally expected to have bowel control.
Zero Tolerance A school discipline policy that mandates predetermined, typically severe consequences or punishments for specific rule violations, regardless of the circumstances.
Manifestation Determination (MD) A review to decide whether a student’s misbehavior is directly caused by their disability, which helps determine appropriate disciplinary actions under special education law.
Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) A systematic process used to identify the causes and functions of a student’s challenging behavior to develop effective interventions.
Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) A structured plan that uses strategies and supports, based on a functional behavioral assessment, to prevent and address a student’s challenging behaviors.
Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support (PBIS) (Particularly when it is implemented school wide) A proactive, school-wide framework that teaches and reinforces positive behaviors, reduces problem behaviors, and creates a supportive school climate.
Interim Alternative Educational Settings (IAES) A temporary placement for a student with a disability who has engaged in behavior that violates school rules, allowing them to continue learning while ensuring safety.
Time-Out Immediately removing a child from the environment in which the child has misbehaved temporarily to an environment that is unstimulating and boring.
