Middle Ages

TermDefinition
Feudalism A system where the king gave land to nobles in exchange for loyalty and military service
Black Death A deadly disease (bubonic plague) that spread across Europe in the 1300s and killed millions
Vassals People given land by a lord in exchange for loyalty and military service
Serfs/Peasants Farmers who worked on the lords land. Serfs were not free to leave the land
Tenants- in- chief Powerful nobles who received land directly from the king
Hierarchy A system of ranking people from highest to lowest based on power
Barthes system Trading good or services without money
Manorialism The economic system where people lived and worked on large estates called manors
Lord(of a manor) A noble who owned land and ruled over a manor
Fiefs Land given by a lord to a vassal in exchange for service
Knights Trained soldiers who fought for their lord and followed the code of chivalry
Nobles Wealthy landowners who had power under the king
Tenure(land) The conditions under which someone holds or uses land
Fidelity Faithfulness or loyalty to a person or agreement
Homage A formal promise of loyalty made by a vassal to a lord
Jones of Arc- Led French troops in battle
Charlemagne- United States much of Europe
William the Conqueror- Invaded Egland in 1066
Alfred the Great- Defended England from Vikings
King John- Signed the Magna Carter
Marco Polo-Traveled to Asia and wrote about
Saladin- Muslim leader during the Curedes
Thomas Aquinas- Combined Religion and Faith
Geoffrey Chaucer- Wrote The Canterbury Tales
Pope Urban II- Called for the First Crusade
