What is the vertical stabilizer? A fixed vertical surface of the wing. It keeps the aircraft flying straight
What are trim tabs? Adjustable tabs on the wing either fixed or hinged to a control surface. It helps reduce control pressure and effort from pilot
What is a warren truss? Type of fuselage with a diagonal braced structure all the strength comes from the truss. Typically covered in a light fabric.
What is semi monocoque? Type of fuselage. It has stringers which are lengthwise members used to hold bulkheads and formers in place and provides stiffness. The bulkheads are crosswise members that provide shape and strength and the skin provides strength
What are spars? A type of wing construction has span wise members made of wood or metal and carries the bending load
What is the rudder? Moveable vertical section of the wing. Provides directional control and coordinates turns.
What is the elevator? Moveable surface hinged on the trailing edge of the stabilizer they provide longitudinal control as well as pitch.
What is the horizontal stabilizer? Fixed Horizontal surface. Provides vertical force to keep the aircraft level.
In a load factor what the difference between a stress and strain? Stress is a measure of the load acting on the material of a structure stress = pressure Strain is the distortion of a body due to stress.
What is a dead load? The weight of the aircraft and its contents
what is a live load? Total load imposed in flight example acceleration turns etc.
What is the load factor? Live load / dead load
What is a yield load? Load which will cause permanent distortion Design + 12
What is an ultimate load? The load which will cause the structure to break design + 50
