QuestionAnswer
topoisomerase: thing on the very end of the dna to relieve tension to prevent dna breakage
SSBP: binding proteins that stabilize open dna
RNA primase: adds RNA nucelotides to dna so DNA poly 1 has double stranded area to attatch to
ligase uses what bonds? covalent
silent mutation: -change in 1 nucleotide -no change in AA and thus no change in protein function
missense mutation: -change in 1 nucleotide -1 AA change and thus lose/dec function in protein
nonsense mutation: -change in 1 nucleotide -AA now codes for a STOP protein, cutting the protein short too soon and thus is usually harmful
frameshift mutation: -deletes or adds nucelotide 1 or more -results in different AA and maybe STOP codon = very harmful
hershey and chase experiments: tags proteins with Sulfur and tags nucleic acids with Phosphorus that are added to bacteria, and found that nucelic acids's phosphorus is shown in the bacteria, proving that nucelic acids are contained with genetic material
promoter: shows "start" (TATA box...)
transcription factors: "bookmark"
enzyme that cuts introns: spliceosome
codon chart: dna --> mRNA (with uracil) --> read chart. *read the codon from the mRNA, NOT the tRNA!!!!
towards rep fork = leading
away rep fork = lagging
steps of PCR: -denaturation: heat DNA to break H bonds and open it up -annealing: cool down, use a primer to show what u want to copy -extension: use dna polymerase to make copies of dna -repeat process 40 or more times!!
tag polymerase: loves heat! allows u to heat dna to higher temps bc tag polymerase can withstand the heat :)
steps in protein synthesis: -transcr - copy specifc gene NUCLEUS -mRNA procces - alternate splicing -translat - use mRNA code as directions to make AA chain/polypepti CYTOPLASM -post-translation (only in euk) - protein folding, add more stuff to make proteins new things CYTOPLASM
order of ribosomes transport: rough ER --> vesicles for transport --> golgi --> membrane or export out of the cell or lysosome
acronym to help remmeber A, C, G, T pairings with pruines and pyrimidines: -pure as gold -cut the pye :)
covalent vs H bonds on DNA: covalent/phosphodiester: on the sides/sugar-phosphate backbone H bonds: in between the base pairs
meselson and stahl experiment: -tagged dna/gave specific weight -determined that dna is semi-conservative

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
