Cardiac Related to the heart.
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that lead to capillaries.
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where oxygen and nutrients move into tissues.
Venules Small vessels that collect blood from capillaries and lead to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Valves Flaps that keep blood flowing in one direction.
Histology The study of tissues under a microscope.
Tunica Externa Outer layer of a blood vessel.
Tunica Media Middle muscular layer of a blood vessel.
Tunica Interna Inner lining of a blood vessel.
Lumen The open space inside a blood vessel where blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation Blood flow between the heart and lungs.
Systemic Circulation Blood flow between the heart and the rest of the body.
Right Atrium Upper right chamber that receives blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between right atrium and right ventricle.
Right Ventricle Lower right chamber that pumps blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Semilunar (Pulmonic) Valve Valve between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Pulmonary Artery Carries blood from heart to lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygenated blood from lungs to heart.
Left Atrium Upper left chamber that receives blood from lungs.
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve Valve between left atrium and left ventricle.
Left Ventricle Lower left chamber that pumps blood to the body.
Aortic Semilunar (Aortic) Valve Valve between left ventricle and aorta.
Aorta Largest artery that carries blood to the body.
Chordae Tendineae String-like cords that hold heart valves in place.
Septum Wall that divides the left and right sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Ridges inside the ventricles.
Papillary Muscles Muscles that help valves close properly.
Apex Pointed bottom of the heart.
Base Top part of the heart.
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) Main artery that supplies the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending (LAD) Supplies the front of the left ventricle.
Circumflex Artery Supplies the right side of the heart.
Right Coronary Artery (RCA) Supplies the side and back of the heart.
Carotid Artery Supplies blood to the head and brain.
Descending Aorta Part of the aorta that goes down through the chest and abdomen.
Subclavian Artery Supplies blood to the arms.
Brachiocephalic Trunk Large artery that branches to the right arm and head.
Axillary Artery Supplies blood to the armpit and upper arm.
Brachial Artery Main artery of the upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on thumb side of forearm.
Ulnar Artery Artery on pinky side of forearm.
Iliac Artery Supplies blood to pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Main artery of the thigh.
Popliteal Artery Artery behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Artery on top of the foot.
Posterior Tibial (PT) Artery behind the ankle.
Jugular Vein Drains blood from the head and neck.
Brachiocephalic Vein Drains blood from head and arms.
Subclavian Vein Drains blood from the arms.
Axillary Vein Vein in the armpit area.
Greater Cephalic Vein Large vein on the thumb side of arm.
Median Cubital Vein Vein in front of elbow (used for blood draws).
Basilic Vein Large vein on pinky side of arm.
Iliac Vein Drains blood from pelvis and legs.
Femoral Vein Main vein of the thigh.
Popliteal Vein Vein behind the knee.
Greater Saphenous Vein Long vein running up the inner leg.
