What was Manifest Destiny [territorial expansion]? Expanding the western U.S. from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean-Americans thought it was their destiny to go west.
What were major barriers to territorial expansion? Rocky Mountains, rivers, deserts.

Who did he hire to explore it? Lewis and Clark
What did it do the size of the U.S. Doubled it
What location of the Mississippi River did they begin their expedition? Missouri River
What was the original goal of their expedition? To find a water route to the Pacific Ocean *Northwest Passage
What was the last physical feature that they crossed before reaching the Pacific Ocean? Rocky Mountains
Who assisted them to the journey? Sacajawea
What was her contribution to the journey? Interpreter/Translator who helped them find their way
What are some things they encountered on their journey? Native Americans, new animals, new plants to use for medicine.
Who was involved in the War of 1812? British, America, France, American Indians.
What were the causes? Impressment, (American sailors who were captured and forced to work on British vessels), British supplied guns to Native Americans, War Hawks pushed Congress to declare war with Britain.
What major events took place in Washington D.C.? Burning of the White House and Capitol, (Madison was president, and his wife, Dolly, saved many famous things from the White House.
Which country did the U.S. acquire Texas? Mexico
What was the Alamo? Church used as a fort at the battle of Alamo.
What was the purpose of the Alamo? Texas wanted independence.
What was the Oregon Trail? A well-known trail that led settlers west to the Pacific Ocean
What led settlers to move west? More space, land, and gold.
What was the Gold Rush? A mass movement of people looking to strike it rich.
What types of towns popped up in California due to people searching for gold? Mining towns, or booming towns
What was life like for people who were searching for gold? It was hard because of limited supplies, limited housing and food was expensive.
What was the Trail of Tears? The relocation of Native Americans to reservations in Oklahoma. Thousands dies
Who was impacted worst by Westward Expansion? Native Americans
Why did so many Native Americans die on the journey to their new reservations? Disease, starvation, bad weather, extreme conditions.
