How do Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein meet? (please be specific) They meet in the Arctic. Victor is on a sled and approaches Robert's ship that is trapped in ice.
What is the story of Victor’s mother? How does Victor feel toward his parents? Victor's mother took care of her father until he died. She is saved by Victor's father Alphonse. Victor loves and idolizes his parents.
What happens to Elizabeth and to Victor's mother as a result of Elizabeth's scarlet fever? How does this compare with the mother's early history? Caroline nurses Elizabeth back to health and then dies. She asks Elizabeth to watch over the children and take care of the family. Caroline had done the same thing after her mother died, she cared for her father until he died.
How does Victor go about creating a human being, and what does he expect as a result of this creation? What happens to Victor in the process? He steals body parts from charnel houses and crypts. He expects to be idolized as a creator. He becomes so obsessed that he doesn't eat or sleep.
How does Victor respond to the actual creation of life? What surprises him about the way the creature he has brought to life looks? He is horrified. He is surprsed by the creature's watery yellow eyes, tight skin, and black lips.
What does Victor dream about the night he brought the creature to life? How does the dream grow out of, comment on, even explain what Victor has done and been through? He dreams about embracing Elizabeth who turns into his mother's dead corpse. The dream is showing how Victor has destroyed the idea of motherhood or the need for mothers.
Why does Justine say she has confessed to the murder of William? How does Victor respond to Justine's situation and to Elizabeth's anguish? The priest threatened to excommunicate her. Victor says he feels worse than Elizabeth and Justine and retreats into a corner.
Whom does Victor see when he nears the glacier? How does he respond? He sees the creature. Victor is filled with horror and rage, to the point where he wants to fight the creature.
When we finally hear the creature speak for the first time, what does he say? Is this what we expect from the creature? The creature has suffered from loneliness and is hurt that Victor detests him. Tells Victor he must do his duty. No this is not what is expected because the creature is supposed to be mindless.
For each gothic element listed below, please provide at least one example from the novel. See next slide for the topic.
Atmosphere of mystery and suspense: Creation of the creature-the moment when Victor brings the creature to life. The storm when Victor returns home and sees the creature.
Omens, portents, and visions: Victor dreams about embracing Elizabeth, who then turns into his dead mother.
High, overwrought emotions: Victor's response to the creation of the creature with horror and runs away. Victor saying he feels worse than Justine who is being sentenced to death. Sits in a corner.
Women in distress Caroline-pennliess and alone after father's death, rescued by Alphonse. Elizabeth-orphaned child living in poverty, adopted by wealthy Frankenstein family. Justine-Unfairly accused of William's murder.
Metonymy is a subtype of a metaphor, in which something (like rain) is used to stand for something else (like sorrow). Please list at least 4 metonymies for “doom and gloom” that suggest some element of mystery, danger, or the supernatural. wind howling, footsteps approaching, clinking chains, lights in abandoned rooms, gust of wind blowing out candles, doors suddenly slamming shut, thunder and lightning, crazed laughter.
