| Epidermis | Outermost layer of skin. Thinnest layer. Made of flat cells in tight layers. |
| Dermis | Middle layer of skin. Strongest layer. Made of a web of protein fibers and cells. |
| Hypodermis | Deepest layer of skin. Made mostly of fat. Many blood vessels and nerves. |
| Keratin | The protein fiber that makes up the epidermis, hair, feathers, fingernails, scales, horns and claws. |
| Melanocyte | Cells in the epidermis that produce skin pigment to protect the body from UV damage. |
| Melanin | The pigment produced in the epidermis that absorbs UV light, darkens skins, and makes up freckles and moles. |
| Fibroblast | The cells in the dermis that produce collagen fibers and fill in scar tissue as a wound heals. |
| Collagen | The tough protein fibers that make up most of the dermis. They are also in bones, tendons, and ligaments. |
| Sweat gland | Produces sweat and releases it from pores. |

| Human papilloma virus (HPV) | The virus that causes warts. Variants of the virus lead to warts in different locations including feet, hands, and genitalia. |
| Ringworm | A red circle shaped rash that grows larger. Caused by a fungal infection. |
| Abscess | Bacterial infection within or below the skin that includes swelling and pus. The pus is usually white or yellow. |
