Epidermis Outermost layer of skin. Thinnest layer. Made of flat cells in tight layers.
Dermis Middle layer of skin. Strongest layer. Made of a web of protein fibers and cells.
Hypodermis Deepest layer of skin. Made mostly of fat. Many blood vessels and nerves.
Keratin The protein fiber that makes up the epidermis, hair, feathers, fingernails, scales, horns and claws.
Melanocyte Cells in the epidermis that produce skin pigment to protect the body from UV damage.
Melanin The pigment produced in the epidermis that absorbs UV light, darkens skins, and makes up freckles and moles.
Fibroblast The cells in the dermis that produce collagen fibers and fill in scar tissue as a wound heals.
Collagen The tough protein fibers that make up most of the dermis. They are also in bones, tendons, and ligaments.
Sweat gland Produces sweat and releases it from pores.
Sebaceous gland Produces oil and releases it onto hair follicles.
Intramuscular injections These injections include: Flu shot, Covid shot, Vaccines, Epipen.
Intravenous injections These injections include: IV fluids, blood draws, heavy duty antibiotics, and tranquilizers like morphine.
Intradermal injections These injections include: Allergy prick tests
Subcutaneous injections These injections include: Local anesthetic, insulin for diabetes, and fluids for dehydrated animals.
First degree burn Burn of the epidermis. No blisters. Red, sensitive skin.
Second degree burn Burn down to the dermis. Blisters form. Very painful.
Third degree burn Burn down to the hypodermis. No blister. No pain in burned region.
Acne Sweat pores clogged with oil and bacteria.
Stretch marks When the dermis gets stretched too rapidly due to puberty, obesity, or pregnancy. Stress and lack of nutrients increases risk.
Callus Thickened layer of epidermis in response to repeated pressure and friction.
Contact dermatitis A substance on the skin triggers a longer lasting immune reaction with itchy and inflamed rashes on skin. Lasts for days to weeks.
Hives A substance on the skin triggers a short lived immune reaction with itchy and inflamed rashes on skin. Lasts for minutes to hours.
Human papilloma virus (HPV) The virus that causes warts. Variants of the virus lead to warts in different locations including feet, hands, and genitalia.
Ringworm A red circle shaped rash that grows larger. Caused by a fungal infection.
Abscess Bacterial infection within or below the skin that includes swelling and pus. The pus is usually white or yellow.
