westward expansion

| Indian Removal Act | A. Johnson’s policy he negotiated treaties with Native Americans exchanging land east of Mississippi for land in the west. This forced them out of their home lands and abused terms of the treaties. |
| Louisiana Purchase | The land purchased by Thomas Jefferson that more than doubled the size of the United States. |
| Oregon Trail | The most well known trail that pioneers used to travel to the Pacific Ocean. |
| Physical barrier | Any quality or feature of geography that worked against or hindered the pioneers in their journey to settle in the west. |
| Physical gateway | Any quality or feature of geography that helped or benefited the pioneers in their journey to settle in the west. |

| Settler | A person who settles in a new colony or settles into an unfamiliar location. |

| The Alamo | One of the most famous battles between Texas and Mexico. |
| Trail of Tears | Journey of Five Civilized Tribes were living in the Deep South when they were relocated to the current state of Oklahoma. The journey was treacherous as exposure to disease, weather, and starvation killed thousands. |
