Westward Expansion

Expansion The act of growing, making larger, or expanding
Expedition A long and challenging journey into a newly discovered area
Gold A precious metal that was very valuable and was the highly sought after mineral during the California Gold Rush
Gold Rush The mass movement of people who moved to California between 1848-1853 in search of gold
Indian Removal Act President Andrew Jackson's policy where he negotiated treaties with Native Americans, exchanging land east of the Mississippi for land in the west- it forced Native Americans out of their home lands and dousing the terms of the treaties
Louisiana Purchase The land purchased by Thomas Jefferson that more than doubled the size of the United States
Oregon Trail The most well known trail that pioneers used to travel to the Pacific Ocean
Physical barrier Any quality or feature of geography that worked against or hindered the pioneers in their mourns to settle in the west
Physical gateway Any quality or feature of geography that helped or benefited the pioneers in their journey to settle west
Pioneer One of the fist settlers in a new territory
Settler A person settles in a new colony or settles into an unfamiliar location
Territorial Expansion The period of time between 1801-1861 when the United States grew tremendously in land size
Territory A geographical area of land marked off and designated for a certain state or country
The Alamo One of the most famous battles between Texas and Mexico
Trail of Tears The journey of the "Five Civilized Tribes" who were living in the Deep South when they were relocated to the current state of Oklahoma. This journey was treacherous as exposure to disease, weather, and starvation killed thousands.
