QuestionAnswer
Alliteration A repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words following each other
Allusion A reference to a statement, a person, a place or event in literature, history or culture
Connotation feelings associated with or connected to a word
Free Verse poetry without a required or set structure
Imagery Language that appeals to the senses.
Onomatopeia use of words that sound like the action or thing they represent
Rhythm Repetition of certain other patterns
Rhyme Scheme a repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds followed
Refrain A word or phrase that repeats through a poem
Stanza a poetic paragraph
Couplet two lines of verse, usally rhyming
Quatrain four lines of verse each two lines rhyming with each other
Tone Thea attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character
Simile A figure of speech comparing two things using like or as
Metaphor a figure of speech comparing 2 object that normally can't be seen as simular. Does not use like or as.
Personification Giving human qualities to non human things
Consonance The repetition of consonant sounds at the end or within the word
Poetry rhythmic, compressed language, that uses figures of speech and imagery to appeal to emotion and imagination
Symbolism A person, place, or thing that stands for something else
Speaker The voice talking in a poem
theme the main idea or message that the poem is expressing
mood the feeling you get when you read a piece of poetry
repetition the repeating of words, phrases, or sentences
concrete poem words that are arranged to form a particular shape
rhyme ` a repetition of the same sounds
end rhyme rhyme that comes at the end of a line of verse
internal rhyme rhyme that comes within a single line
