Westward Expansion

Expansion the act of growing larger or expanding.

Indian removal act Andrew Jackson’s policy where he negotiated treaties with Native Americans, exchanging land east of the Mississippi for land west- this was supposed to be voluntary but ended up forcing the Native out of their land and forgetting the treaties
Louisiana purchase The land purchased by Thomas Jefferson that more than doubled the size of the USA
Oregon Trail The most well known trail that pioneers used to travel to the Pacific Ocean
Physical barrier Any quality or feature of geography that worked against or hindered the pioneers in their journey to settle in the west
Physical gateway Any quality or feature of geography that helped or benefited the pioneers in their journey westward
Pioneer One of the first settlers in a new territory
Settler A person who settles in a new colony or settles in a new location
Territorial Expansion The period of time between 1801-1861 when the United States grew tremendously
