Westward Expansion

| Expansion | the act of growing larger or expanding. |
| Expedition | a long and challenging journey into a newly discovered area. |
| Gold | a precious metal that was very valuable and was the highly sought after mineral during the California gold rush. |
| Gold rush | the mass movement of people who moved to California |
| Indian removal act | Andrew Jackson’s policy where he negotiated treaties with Native Americans, exchanging land east of the Mississippi for land west- this was supposed to be voluntary but ended up forcing the Native out of their land and forgetting the treaties |
| Louisiana purchase | The land purchased by Thomas Jefferson that more than doubled the size of the USA |
| Oregon Trail | The most well known trail that pioneers used to travel to the Pacific Ocean |
| Physical barrier | Any quality or feature of geography that worked against or hindered the pioneers in their journey to settle in the west |
| Physical gateway | Any quality or feature of geography that helped or benefited the pioneers in their journey westward |
| Pioneer | One of the first settlers in a new territory |
| Settler | A person who settles in a new colony or settles in a new location |
| Territorial Expansion | The period of time between 1801-1861 when the United States grew tremendously |
