Biology 2 - C04 - 04

🧬📗1️⃣ Module 4 - Animal Asexual Reproduction - SET 4

QuestionAnswer
What is budding in animals? A new organism grows from the parent and eventually detaches.
Give an example of budding. Hydra and some corals.
What is fragmentation? A parent breaks into pieces, each capable of growing into a new individual.
Give an example of fragmentation. Starfish and flatworms.
What is parthenogenesis? Development of an embryo from an unfertilized egg.
Give an example of parthenogenesis. Bees, aphids, some lizards.
What type of offspring does parthenogenesis produce? Haploid offspring genetically identical to the parent.
Why is budding considered asexual reproduction? It involves only one parent and no gamete fusion.
Why is fragmentation effective for some species? Each fragment can regenerate into a full organism.
What is a key advantage of asexual reproduction? Rapid reproduction without needing a mate.
What is a key disadvantage of asexual reproduction? Lack of genetic diversity.
Which animals commonly use budding? Hydra, corals, some sponges.
Which animals commonly use fragmentation? Starfish, planarians, annelids.
Which animals commonly use parthenogenesis? Bees, aphids, some reptiles and fish.
What environmental condition favors asexual reproduction? Stable environments where rapid cloning is beneficial.
What is regeneration? The ability to regrow lost body parts, sometimes forming new individuals.
How does parthenogenesis benefit insects like bees? Allows rapid production of worker males (drones).
What is unique about parthenogenetic reptiles? Some species can reproduce without males entirely.
Why is fragmentation rare in vertebrates? Complex body systems make full regeneration difficult.
What is the simplest form of animal asexual reproduction? Budding.
Which asexual method is used by starfish? Fragmentation.
