QuestionAnswer
How can looking at a rock tell you how it was formed? Properties of a rock such a as texture, color, and mineral composition are a result of how the rock formed
Texture The size, shape, and position of the grains that make up a rock
How is a sedimentary rock formed? When particles of existing rock are transported by water, wind, gravity, or accumulation to form layers of material called sediment on Earths surface
How is an igneous rock formed? A rock partially melts underground - molten rock separates from solid rock and moves upwards - Hot fluid is called "magma" - Minerals grow together from the magma forming an igneous rock
How is a metamorphic rock formed? Rock deep underground heat up from the extreme heat and pressure surrounding the rock causing the atoms in the original rock to rearrange
What is Lithification? Water moving thru pores between grains of sediment deposits chemicals that acts like cement making it a solid
Process of rock melting and solidifying Heating, changes in pressure, and the addition of water can all cause rock to partially melt - cooling and changes in pressure can then cause magma to solidify forming igneous rock underground or on Earths surface
Igneous rock that is formed underground is called what? Intrusive
Igneous rock that is on Earths surface is called what? Extrusive
What is metamorphism? Over time heat and pressure cause rock to rearrange forming crystals, new materials, and textures
