What is a philanthropist? A person who does charity for the good of others a humanitarian endeavor.
Define Laissez-Faire The idea that the government does not get involved in businesses.
Define Social Darwinism Beliefs that the strongest/most fit companies would outlast the unfit.
How would people who believed in Social Darwinism want the government to interact in business? They would want the government to be hands-off.
What are the characteristics of a monopoly? Complete control of a product/service and eliminates competition.
Why would the government want to stop monopolies/trusts? The lack of competition between businesses.
Why did Populism come about? Struggling farmers, expanding markets/less personal, banks causing debt, and railroads overcharging.
Immigration Push Factors Potato famine, religious restricts, poor living, and political/economic prosperity.
Immigration Pull Factors Jobs created by industrialization, economic prosperity
How did the body of immigrant workers change between 1865 and 1900? Came from Europe and Asia
Where did most immigrants settle? Cities to work in factories (tenements).
People who favored Americans over immigrants were called: Nativists
How did Americans respond to an increase in immigration? Formed Anti-Immigrant groups, Quota Acts, and Discrimination/Violence
Which group of immigrants was most discriminated against? Which policies were used to discriminate against them? Chinese, Chinese Exclusion Act, and Gentlemen's Agreement
Define Urbanization The movement of populations from rural to urban areas.
Describe Factory/Working Conditions Dangerous, low wages, no talking, unsanitary, child labor, long hours.
Describing living conditions (tenements) Overcrowded, bad sanitation, no ventilation, no electricity, gloomy yard, diseases, no windows, and tiny rooms.
The 3 main jobs of people that went west were: 1. mining 2. farming/ranching 3. railroad
Assimilation When a larger culture dominates smaller one, forcing them to take their culture.
Give an example of how native Americans were assimilated: Not able to do the Ghost dance, seen as a threat.
What was the Dawes Act? Divided reservations into individual lots for Native Americans.
What was the purpose of the Ghost Dance? To revive their pre-European existence, talk to ancestors.
