respiratory system diseases/conditions

TermDefinition
aspiration to inhale something in your lungs other than air (vomit, water), prevents gas exchange, source of infection, inaccessible
asthma usually due to an allergen, constriction of bronchial tubes and increased mucus (limited airways, overproduced mucus) treatment - inhaler (aerosolized steroids - corticosteroids)
atelectasis collapsed lung (no air in lung, deflated balloon, due to car accident, air bag) due to airway obstruction (tumor blocking airway), hypoventilation, fluid buildup (uneven fluid in lungs)
bronchitis inflammation of the bronchus, usually viral or irritant (breathing in what you shouldn't)
bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer) smoking, inhaling toxic fumes (factories, mines, not only smokers), 2nd most common in US
bronchospasm constriction of the bronchus
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) category of diseases (nothing blocking air from getting in blood stream)
croup childhood disease characterized by a "barking" cough and high pitched breathing
cystic fibrosis (CF) genetic condition where your body over produces mucus everywhere (need a shaky vest to get it loose)
emphysema #1 type of COPD, alveolar walls develop scar tissue, same cause as cancer
empyema pus in the pleural cavity (bottom of lungs) usually result of lung infection
hay fever allergic disease (exposure to pollen)
influenza acute contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract characterized by sudden onset, fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, cough, and sore throat
pleural effusion the escape of fluid into pleural cavity due to excessive fluid buildup, common in pneumonia, CHF, and liver/kidney diseases
pneumonia fluid in lungs due to illness/aspiration, prevents gas exchange, can be viral, bacterial, fungal, or chemical
pulmonary embolism (PE) blockage of blood supply by a blood clot in lungs, (ex. pulmonary arteries - blood clot prevents your body from getting oxygenated blood)
sleep apnea breathing stops at night due to the tongue/soft palete relaxing too much and blocking airway, obese and people who snore are more prone to this, treatment is CPAP
sputum a collection of mucus coughed up from the lung sent to lab to investigate (see if there's an infection)
strep throat bacterial infection of the pharynx caused by streptococcus bacteria reproducing/attacking
tuberculosis (TB) bacterial infection of the lung, destroys lung tissue slowly, can produce spores (cocooned bacteria, inaccessible), coughing up blood
