Cell Structures

QuestionAnswer
cytoplasm Fluid inside the cell
Cell membrane/ plasma membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell, thus controls homeostasis
cell wall rigid, structure, surrounding the cell membrane; gives extra support & protection
Cytoskeleton cell support, movement, and communication
nucleus stores genetic material(DNA); control center
nucleolus organelle inside the nucleus; makes ribosomes
centrioles pull chromosomes apart during cell division.
rough ER (endoplasmic reticulum) network of tubes with ribosomes; connected to the nucleus; package and transport proteins made by the ribosomes on them
smooth ER (endoplasmic reticulum detoxifies the cell, makes lipids
golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, packages substances made by the cell
vesicle transports substances throughout the cell
vacuoles store water, waste, nutrients, and other chemicals;
chloroplast contains green pigment/chlorophyll; responsible for photosynthesis
mitochondria powerhouse of the cell; makes ATP energy
cilia/cilium short, hair-like, used for movement
flagella/flagellum long, whip-like, used for movement
central vacuole 1 large, center of plant cell; stores food, water, waste
ribosomes make proteins
lysosome contains digestive enzymes; breaks down unwanted cell parts and wastes
peroxisome detoxifies the cell of toxic substances
What do plant cells have that animal cells do not? chloroplast, cell wall, large central vacuole
What do animal cells have that plant cells do not? lysosomes, centrioles, many small vacuoles
Give examples of Eukaryotic cells. plant, animal, fungus, protist

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
