what are the 3 phases of the menstrual cycle? menstrual, proliferative, secretory/luteal
what is the menstrual phase duration and what happens? first part of cycle with first day starting with bleeding and can last 3-7 days but normal is variant for each woman; where the functional zone is sloughed off
what is the proliferative phase duration and what is characteristic of this time? from end of menstruation to ovulation; it is dominated by estrogen causing uterine lining (endometrium) to thicken and engorge with blood at day 14 in response to LH ovulation takes place
what is the time frame of the secretory phase in the menstrual cycle and what is characteristic during this time? ovulation until start of next menstruation; uterine vascularity increases for anticipation for implantation of fertilized egg
after ovulation the ruptured follicle develops into what structure and what does it produce? corpus luteum and produces progesterone
what are the phases of the ovarian cycle? follicular, ovulation, luteal
what are the phases of the uterine cycle (menstrual) menstruation, proliferative, luteal/secretory
what is PID and what organs does it involve? what is characteristic of this disease? Pelvic inflammatory disease involving reproductive tract including uterus, fallopians, and ovaries; shuffling gate and abdominal pain (most common cause in women of child bearing years)
what is endometritis and what does it effect? symptoms? infection of the uterine lining usually a complication following miscarriage, birth, D&C symptoms of fever, blood foul smelling discharge usually 48-772 hours after procedure or miscarriage
what is the #1 cause of maternal death in the first trimester and around what week does it usually happen? where is the most common site? ectopic pregnancy around 8wks and most commonly in fallopian tubes causing severe unilateral abdominal pain
