| allusion | mentioning a well-known person, place, event or literary work |
| connotation | the ideas/meanings that a word brings to mind |
| denotation | dictionary definition of a word |
| diction | an author's specific word choice to relay a meaning |
| epiphany | a sudden realization or idea of a character |
| figurative language | expressions that are not meant to be taken word-for word (types: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole) |
| hyperbole | exaggeration of an idea for emphasis |
| dramatic irony | the audience is aware of something that the character in the story is NOT |
| oxymoron | two opposing words put side-by-side for emphasis |
| parody | humorous imitation of a piece of literature |
| indirect characterization | description of a character through the character's words or actions |
| direct characterization | description of a character through the narrator's specific words |
| soliloquy | a speech that's given in a play by a character to express their feelings |
| dialect | the type of language used in certain regions of the country or world |
| foil | two characters that are so opposite that they make one another stand out |
| tragedy | literature that ends with death/or a major downfall |
| tragic hero | character who dies/has a downfall because of his own flaws |
| harartia | main flaw within a tragic hero |
| idiom | expression or saying that is only understood based on cultural knowledge |
