Lymphatic & Immune
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the lymphatic system and what does it do? | A part of the immune and circulatory systems. Returns leaked plasma to the blood vessels after cleansing it of bacteria and other foreign matter |
| What is lymph and how is it collected? | Escaped fluid that is not taken at the venous ends of arterial beds. Collected from tissue spaces by tiny, permeable lymphatic capillaries |
| What is the goal of non-specific body defenses? | Prevent entry and spread of microorganisms through the body |
| Right Lymphatic | Drains lymph from right arm and right side of the head and thorax |
| Thoracic ducts | Receives lymph from the rest of the body |
| What is the inflammatory response and what triggers it? | Prevents spread of injury- agents to adjacent tissues, disposes of pathogens & dead tissue cells, and promotes tissue repair. Triggered by immune system when there's harmful stimuli |
| How does lymph return to the venous system if it's not pumped or pressurized? | Skeletal muscle contractions |
| What is a lymph node? | A small organ that protects the body by removing foreign bacteria from the lymphatic stream and producing lymphocytes that function in immune response |
| What is the major role of macrophages? | Engulf and destroy bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances in the lymph before it gets to the blood |
| After the lymph is collected, what cleans it? | Lymph nodes filter it and the cleaned fluid is returned to the bloodstream through subclavian veins, then processed by liver/ kidneys and excreted through urinary system |
| Where are the 3 main lymph nodes located? | Neck (cervical), Armpits (Axillary), and Groin (Inguinal) |
| What role does bone marrow play in the immune system? | Primary lymphoid organ & central hub of immune system. Responsible for producing, maturing, and releasing nearly all immune cells, including white blood cells (leukocytes) from stem cells |
| What role does skin play in the immune system? | Forms a mechanical barrier that prevents entry of pathogens and other harmful substances into the body |
| What is a fever? | Systemic response triggered by pyrogens; high body temperature inhibits multiplication of bacteria and enhances body repair processes |
