Literary Terms 3 ELA

ELA

TermDefinition
Character A person, animal, or figure in a story.
Character Types A simple character with only 1–2 traits.
Characterization How an author reveals a character’s traits.
Direct Characterization The author tells you a trait directly.
Indirect Characterization Traits shown through actions, speech, or behavior.
Protagonist The main character (usually the hero).
Antagonist The character or force working against the protagonist.
Archetype A universal pattern or model seen across stories and cultures.
Motivation The reason a character acts the way they do.
Epic Hero A brave, larger‑than‑life hero in an epic story.
Epithet A brief phrase used to describe a person or thing.
Flat Character A simple character with only 1–2 traits.
Round Character A complex character with many traits.
Static Character A character who does not change.
Dynamic Character A character who does change.
Foil Character A character who contrasts with another to highlight qualities.
