agriculture The process where humans alter the landscape to raise crops & livestock for trade and consumption
climate The long-term weather patterns in a region
subsistence agriculture Used to grow enough food & raise enough livestock to meet the immediate needs of the farmer & their family; are usually in less developed regions
commercial agriculture Used to grow/raise enough crops & livestock to sell for profit; most common in developed countries
intensive agriculture Practices where farmers or ranchers use large amounts of inputs like energy, fertilizer, or machines to maximize yields
extensive agriculture Practices that use fewer amounts of inputs and typically produce less yields
intensive commercial agriculture Type of agriculture where heavy investments in labor & capital are used to result in high yields and profits
intensive subsistent agriculture Form of agriculture that is often labor and animal intensive
extensive commercial agriculture Type of agriculture that uses low inputs of resources but has the goal of selling for profit
capital The money invested in land, equipment, & machines
extensive subsistent agriculture Type of agriculture where few inputs are used; like nomadic herding; often used in tropical or arid regions
pastoral nomadism Type of subsistent extensive agriculture that is practiced in arid & semi-arid climates thought it the world; relies on animals for survival
shifting cultivation Type of subsistent farming where farmers grow crops onto a piece of land for a year or 2, then move to another field
plantation A large commercial farm that specializes in one crop
mixed crop and livestock farming An intensive commercial integrated system that demonstrates independence between crops and animals
