Geometry Vocab 9

TermDefinition
Circle A circle is the set of all points in a two-dimensional plane that are equidistant (at the same distance) from a fixed point, called the center
center the fixed point in the interior of a circle that is equidistant (the same distance) from all points on its circumference
radius a line segment in geometry connecting the center of a circle or sphere to any point on its boundary
chord a straight line segment whose endpoints both lie on a circle (or any curve)
secant a straight line segment that intersects a curve at two or more points
tangent a straight line that touches a curve or circle at exactly one point, known as the point of tangency, without intersecting or passing through the interior of the curve at that point
central angle an angle whose vertex is the center of a circle and whose sides (arms) are two radii that intersect the circle at distinct points
minor arc a portion of a circle's circumference that measures less than 180 degrees
major arc a portion of a circle's circumference that measures more than 180 degrees
semicircle a portion of a circle's circumference that measures 180 degrees
congruent circles circles that have the same radius, meaning they are identical in size regardless of their position in a plane
congruent arcs portions of a circle (or identical circles) that have the same measure in degrees and equal length
inscribed angle an angle formed by two chords that share a common endpoint (the vertex) located on the circumference of a circle
intercepted arc the portion of a circle's circumference that lies in the interior of an angle (such as an inscribed or central angle) whose sides intersect the circle
standard equation of a circle (x-h) squared+ (y-k) squared= r squared

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
