uniformitarianism The principle that the same geologic processes occurring today have operated throughout Earth’s history.
fossil The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past.
trace fossil Evidence of an organism’s activity, such as footprints or burrows, rather than its body.
climate The average pattern of weather conditions in a region over a long period of time.
ice core A cylindrical sample of ice drilled from a glacier or ice sheet that provides information about past climates.
relative dating A method used to determine the age of rocks or events by comparing their positions in rock layers.
superposition The principle that in undisturbed rock layers, the oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest is at the top.
unconformity A gap in the geologic record caused by erosion or a period when no sediments were deposited.
geologic column A simplified diagram showing the sequence and relative ages of rock layers.
absolute dating A method used to determine the actual age of a rock or fossil in years.
radioactive decay The process by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by releasing radiation.
half-life The amount of time required for half of a radioactive substance to decay.
radiometric dating A method of determining the age of rocks and fossils based on the decay of radioactive isotopes.
