How minerals break Using a hammer to break off pieces of the rock and examine the mineral
Color and streak Color itself can't help identify the rock, but the streak can. Streak tests are done by rubbing the sample across an unglazed ceramic surface called a streak plate. color can differ from sample to sample
Mineral hardness How hard it is to scratch and break a type of mineral
Three characteristics of a mineral 1. Has the same material throughout 2. Inorganic: non natural or man made 3. Orderly internal structure in the form of crystals
Why are most minerals compounds and not elements? There are countless ways an element can combine to form a compound
Compound Substance composed of atoms of two or most different types of elements that are held together by a chemical bond
Most common elements found on Earths crust Oxygen and silicon
Common elements found on Earths crust Aluminum, iron, calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium
