| Conduct Disorder | A pattern of aggressive and disruptive behavior that violates rules and the rights of others. |
| Strauss Syndrome | An early term for children who were distractible and hyperactive, believed to have brain damage. |
| Cerebral Palsy | A condition caused by brain damage that results in movement impairments. |
| Minimal Brain Injury | A 1950s label for children of average intelligence who were inattentive and hyperactive, believed to have subtle brain damage. |
| Hyperactive Child Syndrome | A term used in the 1960s focusing on hyperactivity rather than assumed brain injury. |
| Neurotransmitters | Chemicals that transmit messages between neurons in the brain. |
| Dopamine | A neurotransmitter linked to attention and executive functioning; found to be abnormal in ADHD. |
| Norepinephrine | A neurotransmitter involved in attention and alertness; also linked to ADHD. |
| Molecular Genetics | The study of genes (DNA) and how multiple genes contribute to ADHD. |
| Executive Functioning (EF) | Mental processes that control behavior, including working memory, inhibition, and flexibility. |
| Behavioral Inhibition | The ability to delay or stop a response and resist impulses. |
| Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) | Symptoms such as daydreaming, mental fogginess, and slow working speed. |
| Adaptive Behavior Skills | Daily living skills such as self-care, communication, and social skills. |
| Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) | A process used to identify the function of problem behavior by examining antecedents and consequences. |
| Contingency-Based Self-Management | A strategy where students monitor their own behavior and receive reinforcement based on it. |
| Momentary Time Sampling | An observation method where behavior is recorded at specific time intervals. |
| Psychostimulants | Medications that stimulate brain functioning and are commonly used to treat ADHD. |
| Strattera | A nonstimulant medication used to treat ADHD. |

| Mind-Wandering | When attention shifts away from the task to internal thoughts. |
| Coaching | A support strategy where a coach helps individuals with ADHD plan, organize, and stay focused. |
