| climate | the prevailing weather conditions over a long period of time |
| albedo | the measure of reflectivity of a surface related to solar radiation |
| insolation | the measurement of the sun's energy that makes contact with the earth's surface |
| angle of insolation | the angle at which the sun's rays strike the surface of the earth. acts as the main factor of solar radiation intensity. |
| zenith | the point in the sky directly above the observer's head. 90 degrees from the horizon. |
| positive feedback loop. | a repeating process that increases in strength over time. Will continue to increase in strength until the feedback loop is interrupted. |
| absorber | any material, gas, or surface that takes in radiation from the sun and converts it to another form of energy. |
| reflector | any material, gas, or surface that solar radiation bounces off of and returns to space. |
| trade wind | persistent winds that blow from 30 degrees north and south to the equator. |
| hadley cell | massive atmospheric convection cells that bring warm air from the equator to 30 degrees north and south latitude. |
| coriolis effect | the deflection winds caused by the CCW rotation of the earth. |
