Reconquista During the 1400s, the campaign by European christians to drive the Muslims from present day Spain.

Crusades A series of wars from the 1000s through the 1200s in which european christians tried to win control of the holy land from Muslims.
Pope Urban II Convened the Council of Clermont where he launched the 1st crusade to win the holy land from Muslims.
Ferdinand and Isabella King of Aragon and queen of Castile whose marriage joined the 2 countries to become the country of Spain, military efforts led to find the final success of the reconquita.
Scholasticism In medieval Europe, the school of thought that used logic and reason to support christian belief.
Vernacular Everyday language of ordinary people.
Gothic Style Type of European architecture that developed in the middle ages characterized by flying buttresses, ribbed vaulting, thin walls, and high roofs.
Flying Buttresses Stone supports on the outside of a building that allowed builders to construct higher, thinner walls that contained large stained windows.
Illumination The artistic decoration of books and manuscripts.
Icon The artistic decoration of books and manuscripts. Icon- Holy image of christ, the virgin mary, or a saint venerated in the eastern orthodox church.
St. Thomas Aquinas A philosopher, theologian and monk who helped bridge the gap between Medieval fath and the philosophy or reason promoted by Greek philosophy, and explained the idea of natural law.
Dante Alighieri Philosopher, writer, and poet who was deeply involved in Italian politics, including the battles between the popes and monarchs of his time, and held political offices at different times throughout his life.
Geoffrey Chaucer Was the 1st important poet of his time to write in english and throughout his life he worked as a copy writer, member of parliament, and justice of peace.
Christine de Pisan Daughter of a physician and astronomer in the French court, was highly educated and spoke several languages and began writing poetry and the comment on social issues.
