Conduct Disorder Characterized by a pattern of aggressive and disruptive behavior
Strauss syndrome rare autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation of small-to-medium-sized blood vessels (vasculitis), high levels of specific white blood cells (eosinophilia), and asthma
Cerebral palsy a group of lifelong neurological disorders appearing in infancy or early childhood that permanently affect body movement, muscle tone, and posture
Hyperactive child syndrome a former term for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Neurotransmitters endogenous chemical messengers released by neurons to transmit signals across the synapse to other neurons, muscle cells, or glands
Dopamine a critical neurotransmitter and hormone produced in the brain that acts as a chemical messenger, regulating pleasure, motivation, memory, and motor control
Norepinephrine a chemical compound acting as both a neurotransmitter in the brain and a hormone in the body, primarily responsible for the "fight-or-flight" stress response
Toxins poisonous, naturally occurring substances produced by living organisms—such as bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals—that can cause disease or injury upon contact with or absorption into body tissues
Executive functioning a set of cognitive processes managed by the brain’s prefrontal cortex that act as a "management system" for daily life, enabling individuals to set goals, plan, focus attention, regulate emotions, and solve problems
Behavioral inhibition a temperamental trait, often appearing in infancy or early childhood, characterized by consistent fear, caution, and withdrawal when facing unfamiliar people, objects, or situations
SCT a behavioral construct characterized by excessive daydreaming, mental fog, lethargy, slow processing speed, and hypoactivity
Contingency base self management is an evidence-based, behavior-modification strategy used primarily in the treatment of substance use disorders
FBA a collaborative, evidence-based process used to identify the underlying purpose or "function" of a student's challenging behavior
CBM a highly efficient, standardized, and evidence-based method used by educators to directly assess student progress in core skills like reading, math, and writing
psychostimulants a class of psychoactive drugs that increase alertness, attention, motivation, and cognitive performance
Strattera a prescription non-stimulant medication used to treat ADHD in children (6+) and adults
Ritalin a prescription central nervous system (CNS) stimulant containing methylphenidate, commonly used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy
