What does the word tax mean? money collected by the government from the people
What geographical feature protected the northeastern borders of the Roman Empire in Europe? the Rhine River
What geographical feature did Romans call Mare Nostrum? the Mediterranean Sea
Why is Augustus Caesar considered one of Rome's greatest leaders? He improved safety measures and built new buildings and aqueducts in Rome.
What was the Pax Romana? a long period of peace in the empire
What was the purpose of the aqueduct? to bring fresh water to Roman cities
What purpose did the arches in the aqueduct serve? They provided support to the structure.
What is Constantine known for? converting to Christianity
What was Byzantium renamed? Constantinople
What did Emperor Justinian do? He wrote a code of laws.
What is the emperor Julius Caesar famous for? setting up a treasury and expanding Rome's borders
What caused the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire? fewer jobs, higher prices, poverty, and crime
How did Augustus Caesar expand the Roman Empire? He kept the tax system of his former ruler and was careful with how he used his power.
Rome grew from a single city to control much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. What factor most helped the Roman Empire expand and control its large territory? Roman armies, roads, and aqueducts
Roman legions were trained to build roads, bridges, and forts wherever they went. How did this help the Roman Empire? It made travel and communication easier across the empire.
One reason the Roman Empire weakened was because its large size made it hard to govern and defend. What other factor contributed to the fall of Rome? attacks from invading groups like the Goths and Vandals
