What does the blindfold represent? Unbiased decision making
What does the sword represent? The power of the law
What does the scales represent? The balanced weighing of evidence
What are the 3 principles of justice? Fairness, equality and access
What does equality mean? The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities
What does fairness mean? Impartial and just treatment or behaviour without favouritism or discrimination
What does access mean? Everyone in the legal system is able to use the resources, procedures and institutions available throughout the legal system
What is the rule of law? The rule of law means that everyone, individuals, groups and government, is bound by and must adhere to laws and the laws should be such that people are willing and able to abide by them
Give 1 example of how the rule of law is applied Presumption of Innocence
What are the 5 characteristics of an effective law? Reflect society's values, be enforceable, be known, be clear and understood and be stable
What is social cohesion? The willingness of people in a society to cooperate, follow shared rules, and look out for each other so everyone can live safely and successfully.
What is a sanction? Punishment given to a person who is found guilty of a crime. The punishment received will depend on the severity of the crime
What are the 5 purposes of a sanction? Punish, protect, rehabilitate, denounce and deter
Define crime A crime is an act or omission against society that is punishable by law
What is Actus Reas? A guilty act
What is Mens Rea? Mental element of a crime
What is a summary offence? A minor criminal offence heard in the magistrates court
What is a summary offence? Speeding
What is an indictable offence? A serious offence usually heard by a judge and a jury
What is an example of an indictable offence? Murder
Based on the lockdown program, what were major factors contributing to women going to maximum security prisons? Drugs, theft and assault
Name the 2 divisions of the supreme court Trial division and appeals division
Name the court with the lowest jurisdiction Magistrates court
Identify the jurisdiction of the county court? To hear all indictable offences other than murder
What is the term to call a case that is heard in the magistrates court? A hearing
What is the term to call a case that is heard in others courts? A trial

Identify a weakness of prison Recidivism rates
What is the court called that hears specifically Indigenous cases? The Koori Court
