ball-and-socket joints joints that consist of the rounded head of a bone that fits into the cup shaped cavity of another bone
cartilage firm, whitish, flexible connective tissue found in various body parts, including where two bones meet to form a joint
condylar joints joints that can bend, straighten, and move side to side
diaphysis long shaft of a bone between two epiphysis
epiphysis end of a long bone
flat bones thin bones that are effective as a protective shell
fontanel the soft spot on a infant's head where the bones have not grown together
foramen an opening or hole, especially in a bone
gliding joint a joint in which bones slide over each other
hinge joints joints that only bend and straighten or open and close with no side to side movements
irregular bones bones that are a complex shape and contain mostly spongy bone with a covering of compact bone
long bones bones that are longer than they are wide and have a hollow diaphysis
ossification the process of taking calcium from any ingested food and drink and depositing it into cartilage to form bone
osteoblasts specialized bone forming cells that begin the mineralization process
osteoclasts a cell that breaks down bone during physical activity so it can be remodeled into new bone cells
pivot joint a joint that allows movement around a single axis
saddle joint a joint in which one bone forms a shape like a saddle and the other bone fits inside
sesamoid bones small, flat. sesame seed-shaped bones embedded within tendons or joint capsules to withstand friction
short bones bones that are as long as they are wide; are made of spongy bone covered by a layer of compact bone
sutured term that describes the way cranial bones grow together to form a strong and immovable joint
