Chapter 6 - A & P Lecture

what are the functions of the skeletal system? support, protection, movement, storage, blood cell production
how does the skeletal system support? bone is hard and rigid; cartilage is flexible yet strong. cartilage in nose, external ear, thoracic cage and trachea. ligament connect bone to bone
how does the skeletal system protect? skull around brain; ribs, sternum, vertebrae protect organs of thoracic cavity
how does the skeletal system aid movement? produced by muscles attached to bones by tendons. ligaments allow some movement between bones but prevent excessive movement
how does the skeletal system aid storage? Ca and P stored and released as needed. adipose tissue in marrow cavities
how does the skeletal system cause blood cell production? bone marrow that gives rise to blood cells and platelets
