QuestionAnswer
What is a homogeneous mixture? A mixture that can’t be distinguished with the naked eye and whose composition and properties are identical.
What is a heterogeneous mixture? A mixture that can be distinguished and whose composition and properties are different.
What are solutions made up of? They are made up of solvent and solute.
What is a solvent? It’s the main component of a solution
What is a solute? It is a component found in smaller quantities.
What are alloys? Alloys are solid solutions made up of two or more chemical elements of which at least one is a metal.
What does the concentration of a solution tell us ? The concentration of a solution tells us how much solute te here is in a given solvent or solution.
What is solubility? Maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solvent
What is filtration? A technique to separate a solid from a liquid.
What is magnetic separation? Technique to separate heterogeneous mixture that only works if one of the substances has magnetic properties and th e rest don’t. You need a magnet
What do you need for the technique of filtration? A filter, a funnel and beaker
What does immiscible mean? It can’t be mixed.
What is distillation? Technique to separate homogeneous mixture that consists of separating soluble liquids that have different boiling points.
What is evaporation ? Technique to separate homogeneous mixture consisting of separating a solution made up of solids solute dissolved in a liquid solvent by natural means ( for example by letting water evaporate) or by heating to boiling point.
What is crystalllisation? The process by which crystals are formed.
What is an atom? Smallest and indivisible part of matter.
What are the particles of an atom? Neutrons, electrons and protons
What are the properties of protons? They are Positively charged and their mass is 2000 times bigger than electrons. They are located In the nucleus.
What are the properties of a neutron? They are Neutrally charged and their mass is the same as the one in protons. They are located in the nucleus.
What are the properties of an electron? They are Negatively charged and their mass is very small. They are located in the orbit around the nucleus.
What does the atomic number indicate? The number of protons
What is the mass number? It is the sum of protons and neutrons
What are the isotopes of an element? They are what we call the atoms of an element with a different mass number
What is the atomic mass number of an element? It is defined as the average mass of the mass numbers of its isotopes according to their abundance.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
