Responsibilities for Incan men- Mining for gold, fighting in the army, and maintaining roads and buildings

What was the purpose of leveled areas in in the hillsides of the Incan city? Terrace farming
What did Incan farmers use to work the land? Hand tools
Which crop is believed to be planted and harvested by the Inca people before any other culture? Potatoes
What did the Inca call themselves? Children of the Sun.
Why did the Inca people mummify their dead? To preserve bodies for the afterlife
What did Incas do when they didn’t have enough water or lacked a water sources? Dug irrigation canals and aqueducts.
What one factor was most responsible for ending the Inca civilization Spanish conquerors
Which advancements made the Aztec Empire stand out from other civilizations at that time? Engineering and architecture
How did geography benefit the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan? Its location on two islands offered protection from attacks by nearby tribes
How did the government within the city-states help the Aztec people and Aztec emperor? They made it easier to govern a large civilization
What were city-states required to do to honor the Aztec emperor ? Pay tribute in gold, food, clothing or human sacrifice
What were Aztec children expected to do, regardless social class? Go to school
Describe Montezuma II . Brutally crushed rebellions, loved religions and served as a priest, educated in many subjects.
Describe the Aztec belief in the afterlife. Warriors had the highest place in their heaven, they believed in a heaven and underworld with different levels, their placement in afterlife was influenced by how they died.
What did the Aztecs use to create more farmland. Swamps and marshes
Where did they use the slash and burn methods? Tropical rainforests
What did they build near cities? Chinampas
What are three facts about the Aztec Emperor? A high council elected the emperor; had to be over 30 & of noble birth; had to be experienced military warrior or leader
Describe Aztec government. Noble families controlled and governed city-states
What in the mountains became important to the Incan society? Plateaus.
The jungle had many resources but did not offer what? Good living conditions.
What did Incas build in the mountains? Structures of finely cut and shaped stone, and suspended bridges
Aztecs developed these technologies or systems Calendar; hieroglyphic writing; irrigation systems.
