| Hypothalamus | regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, and sexual behavior |
| Pituitary gland | releases hormones that direct many other glands |
| Cerebral cortex | Outermost layer of the brain, divided into two hemispheres |
| Subcortical structures | Housed under the cerebral cortex near the center of the brain |
| Hindbrain | Coordinates info coming into and out of the spinal cord and controls the basic functions of life) |
| Midbrain | Important for orientation and movement |
| Cerebellum | controls fine motor skills |
| Pons | relays info from the cerebellum to the rest of the brain |
| Medulla | coordinates heart rate, circulation, and respiration |
| Reticular formation | regulates sleep, wakefulness, and arousal |
| Central nervous system (CNS) | Composed of the brain and spinal cord |
| Peripheral nervous system (PNS) | Connects the central nervous system to the body’s organs and muscles |
